Historical Information :
Djara, the stalactite cave, was put on the map by the German explorer
Gerhard Rohlfs during his famous expedition "3 Monate in der Lybischen
Wueste" on 24th of December 1873.
It was rediscovered recently by the German adventurer Dr. Carlo Bergmann by his
camel exploration and it is classified today by German Archaeological Institute
as the second most important stone-age settlement in the Western Desert beside
Nabqa Playa, located further south close to the " Darb El Arbaein"
(Road of Fourth days).
It is recommended by Dr. Rudolf Kuper from the "Heinrich Barth Institut
" in Cologne to be included as "World Heritage" of the UNESCO
like Wadi Hitan.
The location of the cave is close to the crossing of the "Darb
Assiut" (Caravan road connecting Farafra Oasis and Assiut) and the Abu
Muhariq Sand-dune (the longest dune in the Western Desert approximately
1500km), that means it is 180km away from Bahariya Oasis as well as from
Farafra Oasis.
The cave itself is around 30m wide and 8m high and you can see a few engravings
of animals dating back to Neolithic Period. |
